Textured Embossing

Hi, Everyone,

It’s Technique Tuesday!

Did you know that your Embossing Folders can do more than dry emboss paper? They can also be used to create “Textured Embossing” with Modeling Paste. We scrape modeling paste over masks to create texture. This same texture can be achieved by using Embossing Folders once the Modeling Paste is dry. Today we will be using Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folders to create a textured background for a 12x12” layout.

DSCN3947

Let’s begin.

DSCN3942
First, I took some Liquitex Modeling Paste & added Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder to create a slightly shiny silver paste. I wanted a light dove grey colour with some sparkle.

DSCN3943
Next, I took an old credit card & scraped a thin layer of the coloured Modeling Paste over 3 pieces of Core’dinations Cardstock. Use any kind of a scraper that will give you a thin even layer, so it dries quickly.

DSCN3944
Then, I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface, to add more of an iridescent finish.

DSCN3945
In order to set the Perfect Pearls so it does not smear, mist it with water . . .

DSCN3946
Then heat set it. Dry it until there is no more moisture on the backside of the paper. This only takes about 2 minutes.

DSCN3954
When the Modeling Paste is dry, place this piece of cardstock in a Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folder & run it through a Big Shot or a Sizzix Embossing machine.

DSCN3947
When you take it out of the embossing folder, this is what it looks like.

DSCN3948
The embossing folder rubs off some of the iridescent finish, so again I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface, misted it with water & heat set it.

DSCN3949
I die cut various gears from black Core’dinations cardstock for my layout.

DSCN3950
Then, I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface of the cardstock, misted it with water & heat set it. Yes, I love an iridescent shiny finish.

DSCN3951
Finally, to add grungy depth to the textured panels, I rubbed Black Soot Distress Ink over the raised surface.

DSCN3952
This is what the layout looks like all put together . . .

DSCN3953
and here is a close up of the “Textured Embossing”.

There are so many Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folders & beautiful colours of  Perfect Pearls dry powders out there, so try experimenting on your next project.  [Modeling Paste is found at Art Stores.]

Love those Paper Dolls . . . & the Travel Layouts!

Hi, Everyone!

On the eve of the Pre-National Scrapbooking Weekend I would like to share the 3 Art Journal Pages I created from the scraps from the May Month Kit available at Treasured Memories.  I designed the "World Traveler" kit & made 10 12x12" Travel Layouts & 3 Art Journal Pages.  They turned out beautiful.

Have a look!

Below are 3 of the Travel Layouts I designed.  I included 2 transparency sheets created by Daryl specifically for this month kit which include filmstrips, slides, & overlays.  Also, as a bonus, I have included in the kit 2 die cut cardstock cameras & 2 postage stamp photo mats.   As well, anyone who purchases a kit may use the stamps I used in the demo layouts.  Here's a sneak peek!

Love those torn pages & postage stamps.

Technique Tuesday - Encrusted Jewel Technique

Hi, Everyone,

It’s Technique Tuesday!

Today we will be experimenting with the Encrusted Jewel Technique. This technique uses embossing ink & embossing powder to encrust or encase Mica Fragments, Glass Glitter & BeaDazzles or other “jewels” into the embossing powder to add sparkle to your projects. In this technique it is very important to remember to heat set your paper from underneath not over top of your paper. This is done so your jewels/flakes/beads do not blow off your project before the embossing powder has had a chance to melt & adhere them to the surface. Today we will be creating a card showcasing this technique.

DSCN3911

Let’s begin.

DSCN3898

First, gather your embossing ink, embossing powders, & all the tiny “jewels” you will be using on your project. I have chosen Distress Embossing Ink, Zing Clear Embossing Powder, Stampendous Mica Fragments, Sterling Glass Glitter, & BeaDazzles. There are many varieties of glitters, beads, & fragments out there that will work. Treasured Memories has lots to choose from.
DSCN3899

To create a background for my card, I stamped two broken glass stamps into Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink & stamped all over the card.

DSCN3900

I then used the same Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink to ink around the edges of the card. I have discovered many beautiful images on Pinterest & have printed off and fussy cut this bird image to use today.

DSCN3901

DSCN3902

To begin, press the edges of the card into the embossing ink, sprinkle with Clear Embossing Powder, & heat set. Next, press the edges of the card into embossing ink a second time, sprinkle with Clear Embossing Powder, then sprinkle on some Mica Fragments, Glass Glitter & BeaDazzles. Finally, sprinkle a little bit of Clear Embossing Powder on top of the “jewels” then heat set from underneath. This is what it looks like before you heat set it the second time.

DSCN3903

. . . And this is what it looks like after you heat set it from underneath when all the “jewels” are set in the embossing powder.

DSCN3904

In order for my “jewels” to be totally encrusted, I press the edges of the card into embossing ink again, sprinkle on some Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE), & heat set from underneath again.

DSCN3905

I added two colours of Distress Core’dinations Cardstock to the front & back of the card & this is what the card looks like when it is finished. Below are some close-up views of how dimensional the Encrusted Jewel Technique really is.

Embossing Powders are not only beautiful finishes, they are melted mediums in which to encase beautiful “jewels“. Check out the many different varieties of BeaDazzles and Glitter the next time you are at Treasured Memories.

Sneak Peek - Baby Album

Hi, Everyone,

I'm loving the baby layouts I've been working on so much that I just had to share.

I'm creating 12x12" Baby Album kits & absolutely adore how they are turning out.
The "Scrap-by-Number" kits will be available at Treasured Memories within 2 weeks.  The only things you need to buy to complete the 50 PAGE Album is a 12" Ring Binder & adhesive.

Here's a sneak peek of one of the layouts.

The pop-dotted pieces really add dimension to the page.
I especially love the dragonfly & the slide mounts!

Technique Tuesday - Washi Tape

Hi, Everyone,

It’s Technique Tuesday!

Last week we talked about Paper Tape so this week we will talk about Washi Tape.
There are a lot of Washi Tapes on the market as well & they too are fun to experiment with. Washi Tape is a good quality masking tape made of rice paper. More importantly, it is beautiful and useful at the same time. You can tear it, stick it, create designs with it, and write on it. Washi Tape has a low tack adhesive backing which means you can reposition the tape making it easy to use.

Today I’m going to show you how to create a simple card using Washi Tape. This same technique can be used on a scrap booking page as part of the design.

DSCN3892

Let’s begin.

DSCN3884
First gather several different patterns & colours of Washi Tapes & a blank card.

DSCN3885
I started off by running a single strip of Washi Tape #1 near the top of the card.

DSCN3886
Next, I ran a single strip of Washi Tape #2 directly underneath.

DSCN3887
Then I glued half a paper doily underneath & ran another single strip of Washi Tape #1 over the top of the doily.

DSCN3888
Using a double strip of Washi Tape #3, I created a banner poking out of the doily.

DSCN3889
Using a double strip of Washi Tape #4, I created a 2nd banner on top of the doily & previous Washi Tape.

DSCN3890
Using a single strip of Washi Tape #5, I created a 3rd banner on top of the 2nd banner I just created.

DSCN3891
Finally using a Precision Marker, I outlined the banners, the Washi Tapes, & the card . . . then I add some doodling.

DSCN3892
This is what the card looks like all put together!
