Textured Embossing

Hi, Everyone,

It’s Technique Tuesday!

Did you know that your Embossing Folders can do more than dry emboss paper? They can also be used to create “Textured Embossing” with Modeling Paste. We scrape modeling paste over masks to create texture. This same texture can be achieved by using Embossing Folders once the Modeling Paste is dry. Today we will be using Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folders to create a textured background for a 12x12” layout.

Let’s begin.

First, I took some Liquitex Modeling Paste & added Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder to create a slightly shiny silver paste. I wanted a light dove grey colour with some sparkle.

Next, I took an old credit card & scraped a thin layer of the coloured Modeling Paste over 3 pieces of Core’dinations Cardstock. Use any kind of a scraper that will give you a thin even layer, so it dries quickly.

Then, I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface, to add more of an iridescent finish.

In order to set the Perfect Pearls so it does not smear, mist it with water . . .

Then heat set it. Dry it until there is no more moisture on the backside of the paper. This only takes about 2 minutes.

When the Modeling Paste is dry, place this piece of cardstock in a Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folder & run it through a Big Shot or a Sizzix Embossing machine.

When you take it out of the embossing folder, this is what it looks like.

The embossing folder rubs off some of the iridescent finish, so again I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface, misted it with water & heat set it.

I die cut various gears from black Core’dinations cardstock for my layout.

Then, I brushed a layer of Perfect Pearls Pewter dry powder over the surface of the cardstock, misted it with water & heat set it. Yes, I love an iridescent shiny finish.

Finally, to add grungy depth to the textured panels, I rubbed Black Soot Distress Ink over the raised surface.

This is what the layout looks like all put together . . .

There are so many Sizzix Alterations Embossing Folders & beautiful colours of  Perfect Pearls dry powders out there, so try experimenting on your next project.  [Modeling Paste is found at Art Stores.]

Have fun creating!

    1. I love mixed media, so incorporating modelling paste to projects is fun. I will be doing this a lot more. Stay tuned.
